MOCHA file is usually a project file created by Boris FX Mocha, a visual effects and video editing tool used for planar tracking, rotoscoping, object removal, screen replacement, and similar post-production work. It is not normally a finished video file. Instead, it works more like a saved project or workspace that stores the editable work created inside Mocha. For example, if an editor tracks a moving phone screen, laptop screen, signboard, wall, license plate, or other surface in a video, the MOCHA file can save the tracking data that tells the software how that area moves throughout the footage.
A MOCHA file may also store roto work, which comes from the word rotoscoping. Rotoscoping means drawing shapes or masks around parts of a video so they can be isolated or edited separately. For example, an editor may draw a shape around a person, car, face, product, or background object. That shape can then be used to blur an area, change the color of one object, remove something, or separate a subject from the background. The MOCHA file can save these spline shapes, masks, keyframes, tracked surfaces, layers, motion data, and project settings so the editor can reopen the project later and continue working without starting over.
Mocha is especially useful because it uses planar tracking. Instead of tracking only one small point, it tracks a flat surface or area. This makes it effective for tracking things like signs, walls, screens, floors, boxes, labels, and other surfaces that move, rotate, tilt, or change perspective in the video. The tracking data can then be used for tasks such as replacing a screen, attaching text to a moving object, stabilizing footage, blurring a license plate, removing an unwanted object, or matching an effect to the movement of the scene.
A MOCHA file may also reference the original media used in the project. This means the file itself may not contain the actual video footage. If the original video file is moved, renamed, or deleted, Mocha may ask the user to relink the missing footage when opening the project. This is similar to how a Photoshop PSD file saves layers and edits, while the final image may be exported separately as a JPG or PNG. In the same way, a MOCHA file saves the working data, while the final video is usually exported from After Effects, Premiere Pro, or another video editing program.
To open a MOCHA file, you usually need Boris FX Mocha, Mocha AE, or Mocha Pro. Mocha AE is the version that comes bundled with Adobe After Effects and is commonly opened through Animation → Track in Boris FX Mocha. It is useful for many tracking and masking tasks inside After Effects. Mocha Pro, on the other hand, is the full professional version with more advanced tools for object removal, stabilization, lens correction, and higher-end visual effects workflows. Some MOCHA files may open in Mocha AE, but files created with advanced Mocha Pro features may require Mocha Pro to work properly.
There is also another meaning of Mocha in programming. In that context, Mocha usually refers to Mocha.js, a JavaScript testing framework used by developers to automatically check whether their code works correctly. Mocha.js is different from a MOCHA video project file. It does not usually create `.mocha` project files. Instead, it uses JavaScript test files and optional configuration files such as `.mocharc.
